Scripture & Application
- 1. Look at what God commands Saul in v. 3, then see Saul’s response in v. 9. What was Saul’s sin? It wasn’t just disobedience. Notice that it says that they only destroyed “all that was despised and worthless”. Then, he even lies about it in v. 13! Saul’s sin was not just disobedience, it was a selfish disobedience in order to make himself rich and look better to all the other Israelites. Do you remember a time when you did something selfish or mean to make yourself feel better or look better to someone else? Share with one another.
2. Sometimes, we think we are following God, when we are actually just worshipping to make ourselves look or feel better. Saul does this when he lies again in v. 20. When we worship God because we want to go to heaven or because we want him to give us something, we are committing the same sin as Saul. Samuel rebukes Saul and us as well in v. 22-23. Remember that God only wants worship that comes out of obedience and love for him. Do you remember a time when you feel like you worshipped God for the wrong reasons? Share with one another.
