Scripture & Application

1. Verses 1-6 tell us how to be wise son or daughter. A “wise son’ listens to Application instruction (v. 1), works hard for his food (v. 2), watches what he says (v. 3), is diligent with everything he does (v. 4), hates lies and gossip (v. 5), and is generous and kind to all (v. 6). Do you live your life wisely or unwisely? For both parents and children, how have your unwise decisions caused conflict or pain in our family?

2. Verses 7-8 are a funny observation about how strange the world is sometimes. Rich people will always be worried about having more while poor people can be more generous and relaxed because they don’t have anything for anyone to steal! In his wisdom, God has created the world to be a strange and upside-down place, like when he saved the world by dying for it! What are some ways you’ve noticed that what God says is the opposite of what the rest of the world says.

3. Verses 20-22 talk about making friends with people who are wise and righteous. A wise person is someone who knows God and seeks to be like Jesus in every part of their lives. A righteous person is someone who is willing to sacrifice themselves in order to give to someone else. Do you have any wise friends in your life? Do you have any righteous friends in your life?
Share about them with each other!

4. Verse 24 is the favorite verse of a lot of parents! It talks about disciplining children if you love them. Your parents discipline you because they love you! lf they never disciplined you and let you do whatever you want all the time, then this proverb says that they hate you! The other side of this is for parents to know. Ephesians 6:4 warns parents to not provoke your children, but to bring them up in discipline and instruction of the Lord. An ungodly, unrighteous, unloving parent will not be able to discipline their children properly if they aren’t listening to and caring about their children’s feelings. Take this time to talk about any bitterness or unforgiveness anyone in the family might be feeling toward one another. Pray together to forgive each other and end with a big hug!
